The Safe + Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy that can be used as a tool to facilitate improved flexibility of the autonomic nervous system. It was developed and patented by Dr. Stephen Porges, the author of Polyvagal Theory. Participants listen to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider in person or remotely. The SSP is designed to engage the nervous system in a way that helps them attune to safety that is available to them in the moment. Traumatic experiences can stick with us in a way that keep us in defense states, even when they are not technically needed. When the threat is no longer present, we might stay stuck in some version of fight/flight or shut-down. As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to retune the autonomic nervous system to better support regulation and resilience.

The SSP can be a helpful compliment to clients doing trauma work such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Trauma Sensitive Yoga, among others. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or are interested in doing the SSP.

Pricing for SSP depends on whether you are a current client, as well as whether you will be doing the listening in person or remotely on your own.

  • If you are a current client, access to the SSP starts at $65.
  • If you are not a current client, SSP packages start at $350.
